How to Choose Readers for Your Wedding Ceremony
By Nikki Kulin – Independent Celebrant & Celebrant Trainer Weddings in the UK, Spain & European Destinations
One of the joys of working with a celebrant is the freedom to design a ceremony that truly reflects you. But with that freedom comes lots of choices—big and small—that help shape the tone and feel of your wedding day. One decision that often surprises couples in its importance is:
Who should we ask to do a reading during our ceremony?
If you’re planning your wedding in the UK, Spain, or anywhere in Europe, and working with a celebrant like me, you’ll have complete flexibility in how (and whether) to include readings. And when chosen thoughtfully, readings can become some of the most emotional, humorous, or memorable moments of the ceremony.
Include Readers in Your Wedding Ceremony?
Having loved ones take part in your ceremony through a reading can add an extra layer of meaning, personality and connection to your day. Whether it’s a family member, a close friend, a bridesmaid, or even one of your children, inviting them to share a reading can be a lovely way to honour their place in your life.I work closely with each of my couples to explore creative ways of including others—whether that means choosing a well-known reading or creating something totally bespoke.
How to Choose the Right Reader
Here are a few things to consider when choosing someone to do a reading:
✔️ Are they comfortable speaking in front of others?Public speaking can be daunting—so always check that the person you’re asking feels confident (and excited!) to take on the role. If they’re unsure, we can find gentle alternatives like group readings, shared lines, or even pre-recorded messages.
✔️ Do you want to choose the reading—or let them surprise you? Some couples like to select the exact reading they want, others prefer to leave it in the hands of the reader. I’m always happy to liaise directly with your chosen reader to create a surprise that fits the tone of the day and reflects your relationship beautifully.
✔️ Would they like to write something themselves? Some guests (especially creative types!) may love the chance to pen something original. I’ve had everything from heartfelt letters to hilarious poems in the style of Pam Ayres—like the one written by Jen & Robert’s aunt, which had the entire ceremony in fits of laughter!
Ideas for Different Types of Readers
Children: Young guests often love to take part. I can suggest age-appropriate readings, or they may even memorise a few lines to speak from the heart.
Absent Loved Ones: Have someone read a message or letter from a guest who can’t be there in person.
Creative Friends & Family: Encourage them to write something original—like Terri, Theresa & Paul’s bridesmaid, who surprised everyone with a beautiful poem of her own.
Where to Find the Perfect Reading
If you’re feeling stuck, don’t worry—Google might offer thousands, but I’ve carefully selected a collection of my favourite wedding readings on my blog. Browse by categories like: Funny, Traditional, Alternative, Spiritual, Modern love stories. I’ll help you find something that feels completely you—or inspire someone special to create their own.
